The regeneration project to restore Harold Peto's historic gardens at the Petwood were rewarded with a prestigious BALI award at an awards ceremony at Grosvenor House in London last week. Winning the 'Regeneration Scheme - Under £500k Principal Award' for 2018, Whiting Landscape carried out extensive work across the Petwood gardens including the restoration of the "Long Walk'. This has attracted numerous positive comments from guests over the summer as it grew into full bloom. 

Harold Peto (1854-1933) was an architect who created a number of fine gardens throughout England in the Italianate style, perhaps best known for the gardens at Ilford Manor and West Dean House in Sussex. His gardens at the Petwood, designed in 1912 featured a number of classic Edwardian features such as a temple and formal pond area and the aforementioned Long Walk. These were all extensively restored during the Whiting Landscape project. A replica of the 'Temple of Atalanta', copied from historical photographs as well as the restoration of the Long Walk and its colourful beds and horley festoon have all given the gardens a real lift.  The project also featured the restoration of the original terracing and balustrade along with some new works to upgrade car parking and a new formal entrance.
