Enjoy a bike ride along the railway line, a moderate ride (I've done many times with my daughter on the back), with beautiful scenery and a chance to see Historic Town Horncastle.  Enjoy lunch and a drink at the many pubs in town before you start your journey back.  Bikes can be hired at Bainland Country Park.

Lincolnshire has a variety of attractions ranging from beautiful countryside walks to rich historical sites. Some of the following suggestions might be of interest for planning your visit.

Historic places of interest

Lincoln Cathedral - Towering above Lincoln, this is one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe and is a must-see attraction when visiting Lincolnshire.
Lincoln Castle
- Built on a Roman fort, William the Conqueror began building Lincoln Castle in 1068. 2015 sees the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta and exciting multi-million pound developments are underway at the Castle.
Tattershall Castle - A nearby medieval castle built in the 1440s, Tattershall Castle is our most local National Trust property.
Doddington Hall - An Elizabethan family home, Doddington Hall offers an insight into life through the ages and the challenges of looking after such an estate today.
Gunby Hall - Another nearby National Trust property, Gunby Hall is nestled at the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds and counts Alfred Lord Tennyson as one of its previous visitors.

Woodhall Spa places of interest

Kinema in the Woods - the former Petwood cricket pavilion converted into a cinema in the 1920s. Even today films break for an intermission and a Compton Kinestra Organ emerges from under the stage. Experience this very special attraction of Woodhall Spa and find a list of films and matinee and evening showing times from Reception.
The Cottage Museum - Founded to preserve the history of the local community, The Cottage Museum has a fabulous archive of local history and photographs.
Jubilee Park - a historic recreational area ever popular with both locals and visitors offering swimming, bowls, croquet and tennis. Petwood guests can enjoy discounted swimming rates. Please ask at Reception for more details.

Aviation Heritage places of interest

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre at RAF Coningsby - Operating a Lancaster, five Spitfires, two Hurricanes, two Chipmunks and a Dakota, this living and breathing tribute is not to be missed.
Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby - Based on the former RAF Bomber Command airfield. Displays include an Avro Lancaster bomber and an original Barnes Wallis bouncing bomb.
Thorpe Camp at Tattershall Thorpe - Attached to the airfield at Woodhall Spa where 97, 617, 619 and 627 Squadrons were based. Open Sundays and Mondays from Easter to end of September and Wednesdays during July and August 1pm - 5pm.

See Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire for more detailed information on the enormous number of aviation sites and visitor attractions.

For the foodies

If visiting Lincoln for the day, try The Cheese Society for a delicious Select Lincolnshire lunch. It is very popular and so expect a short wait for a table or arrive early! Once you have discovered your new favourite cheese you can even order online to have it delivered to your home. What could be better?

Doddington Hall café also makes a tasty stop with a range of lunch items and homemade cakes, not to mention a fabulous Farm Shop showcasing Select Lincolnshire produce.
